What could have been the third abduction of 1954, if details of just when the investigation took place, or if contemporaneous reports could be found, was supposed to have happened on 2 November at Santo Amaro in Brazil. A taxi driver walking home from work saw a glowing circular object about 30-40m. in diameter at a street corner, and when he tried to flee, found himself paralyzed, speechless and in the grip of a strange feeling. This was replaced by great curiosity, and somehow he walked through a sliding door into the object. Inside was a circular room lit by a soft, lampless, illumination. On a curiously-shaped table were various maps and charts, including one of South America.
He suddenly found himself faced by three human shaped beings less that 3ft tall, with dark brown skin, and dressed in light grey, one-piece coveralls without buttons or zips. In their belts were what looked like

guns. He stared at him intently without speaking, but conversed amongst themselves in a language «with a lot of k’s». The taxi driver found himself paralyzed again and back outside the object. As the earliest date of publication for this story is 1967 it may well not have surfaced until that time, and been subjected to inevitable contamination; but we can see hints of doorway amnesia and mental control, though again, sex and medical procedures are absent. Emphasis instead is on military plans, perhaps for the invasion of brazil, which was one of the obsessions of Olave Fontes, the investigator. The lampless light has been hailed as some sort of evidence for authenticity, but it should be noted that it also appears in the contactee stories of Truman Bethurum (of which more later) and George Adamski. As far back as the seventeenth-century Robert Kirk recalled meeting a woman who had been taken to a place «full of light without anie fountain [source] or lamp from whence it did spring». [ Robert Kirk, The Secret and a Short Treatise of charms and Spels [sic], (ed. Stewart Sanderson), D. S. Brewer for the Folklore Society, 1976. CF modern language version of Secret Commonwealth incorporated in R. J. Stewart, Robert Kirk.
Perhaps the earliest reference to medical procedures in these stories comes from the mid-fifties with the fragmentary story of Fred Reagan, a pilot who was supposed to have crashed into a flying saucer in July 1952. He was rescued by the crew, who cured him of cancer, although not very thoroughly, it would seem, as he died of a brain tumour a couple of years later. These extraterrestrial Samaritans are said to have resembles 3ft. tall asparagus stalks. Who says these stories don’t vary?
A 1956 abduction featured in the Todd Kitteridge affair. Kitteridge had claimed that, awoken by his dogs, he saw a golden ball descending behind the branches of a tree as the dogs ran around barking. From it emerged three tall beings dressed in ski-suits, with long blonde hair, and strange protruding eyes. At first he felt afraid, but his fear disappeared and it seemed he was no longer thinking his own thoughts. One of the men said he was from Venus, but left when the dogs continued to harass him. The object returned three days later. The same thing happened to a woman schoolteacher and to a linesman. The women later rang the investigators in hysteria, saying ‘they’ were visiting and threatening to abduct her. [INTCAT files. Civilian Saucer Intelligence Newsletter, 5, p.15, quoting Hollywood Citizen 20 July 1956, and investigated by Isobel Epperson.
There is no doubt about the widespread distribution of the abduction escape narrative of Stig Rydberg and Hans Gustavsson, relating their attempted kidnap by wholly inhuman grey ‘things’, 1.35m. tall, 60cm. thick, which caught them in an inhuman grip. They were associated with a high-pitched hum, and the witnesses arms were pulled up to their elbows in a featureless blob. This story, from Domsten in Sweden, appears to be the first abduction case involving hypnosis.
With that caveat, the story goes as follows: C.M., a retired police officer and real-estate dealer, staying at his beach house, one night had a strong compulsion to go for a walk along the beach. He then felt drawn towards a strange light, and as he approached it he saw that it was from a disc on the beach. One or two helmeted individuals approached, but the light obscured details. They seemed to communicate the command, «Do not resist. You can’t». He felt paralyzed but strangely unafraid. He then had a fragmentary memory of someone scratching his arm with an instrument, then he had a two-hour time lapse. When he recovered he found himself back in the beach house; the light had gone and the beach was deserted.
He later became depressed, anxious and antisocial. As of 1967 he was said to be reusing hypnosis. Trying to clarify just when this story emerged would be most useful, for if it does predate the Hill’s, it would mark the first emergence of time-loss and post-encounter trauma.
Other stories of the period show how artificial the line between abduction and contactee stories really is. For example, in 1962 there appeared in Switzerland the story of Hans Klotzbach of which only a fragmentary English language version exists [39]. The central theme seems to be that Hans passed out after injuring his legs from jumping off a moving train. He recovered consciousness in the illuminated blue interior of a UFO, where undescribed beings healed his legs while warning of impending terrestrial catastrophes. He then fell unconscious again, recovering by the railway track, his legs covered in blood, but uninjured.
The story of Olaf Nielsen also shows a mixture of motifs. Walking near Halmstad in Sweden, in a lonely spot between woods and fields, he found himself»caught as it were in a dizziness and sucked up into the air.» About 20 m. above the ground was a strange object and he felt himself drawn into it as he passed out.
When he came to himself he was lying on a couch in a small cabin of pale-green colour, illuminated by a faint, diffuse, sourceless light. A human-type being entered to room and apologized for abducting him. He was then taken to a subterranean base where he was shown several ‘saucers’ and told about a protective magnetic curtain they were setting up to protect themselves from the hostile ‘Dark Ones’ from Orion. There were many other bases in Central Asia, Latin America, etc. In the latter case they had adapted pre-Inca to their own needs [40]
Another transitional tale is that of the Florentine tailor Mario Zuccala, who in the twilight of nine o’clock on an April evening was walking home through a wood when, at a crossroad clearing where the path crossed a small canal, he felt himself struck by a sharp gust of wind. An object like an inverted bowl passed overhead and came close to the ground about 6 – 7 m. away. From its underside came a cylinder, which opened up revealing a diffuse white light from which two beings emerged.
They were 1.5 m. tall, dressed in metallic suits wearing helmets surmounted by antennae. They took hold of the witness gently under his armpits and led him into the empty interior of the object, which was lit by the same diffuse light. He was unable to make out any details of the interior.
They then let go of him, as a voice «… from the inner part of the object … like one amplified by a microphone and as if resounding in a vast space» spoke to him in Italian. The only part Zuccala could remember was a message that at the fourth moon they would return at one in the morning to give him a message for humanity. He was then escorted out of the object and somehow found himself outside his own door. His wife heard four loud knocks which he does not remember making, and found him terrified on the front porch. He was very nervy that night. No traces were found at the site. Zuccala later claimed to have been contacted again and to have been given half a massage which he kept in a locked case, the other half being given to someone in another European country.
A more genuinely transitional story was that of Arthur Berlet, whose alleged 1958 encounter surfaced in 1965. The story begins with classic abduction motifs: stunned by a beam of light, doorway amnesia, wakes up on a bed in a strange environment. Thereafter the story trails off into an exceptionally dull narrative of his adventures on the planet Acart, to where he had been abducted by an insubordinate saucer captain who wanted him to tend the biological specimens. On Acart the contrite leadership gave him a guided tour while expounding on the population explosion.
Overpopulation was one of the themes in another 1965 story, that of the Californian TV repair man Sid Patrick. Walking along a beach at night he saw an egg-shaped object flying low. He was invited on board where he met a crew of people of both sexes with dark ‘short but uncut-looking hair’, pointed chins and long thin fingers. One of them, the leader, spoke to him. Bullard’s motifs of tour, journey, conference and theophany followed. During the tour, the evasive leader always kept his right side towards Patrick, who noted that all surfaces in the uniformly lit interior were rounded. There was a ‘third layer’ to which he was not invited, but he was shown a sort of screen or lens in which he saw a cigar-shaped navigation craft.
The ‘leader’ gave his name, but it was nothing more than a buzzing sound, variously transcribed as Zno, Zienna or Zeno. They are insectoid and they ‘live as one’ in a war- and crime-free, but highly regimented world with strict birth control. Their children are trained for set tasks on ‘an unseen world at the back of the one we do see’. They do not measure time and distance as we do. They took Patrick up onto a mountain top where he was allowed to walk alone. The beings said they were on a mission of exploration, but he got the impression there was some unfathomable ‘religious’ aspect to it, and he had a mystical experience in a sort of chapel.
The divide between contactee and abductee is not very apparent either, in a 1965 letter sent to Dr Frank Salisbury, the botanist and ufologist, by a semiliterate 19-year-old shipping clerk who claimed to have been taken from his house in a glassy sphere, to a large black object where he met a 6-foot 7-inch tall leader and a ‘beautiful copper-skinned girl’ with blonde hair and blue eyes, who wore black uniforms with disc-shaped shoulder pads and serpent motifs on the pockets.
Other stories of the period show how artificial the line between abduction and contactee stories really is. For example, in 1962 there appeared in Switzerland the story of Hans Klotzbach [38] of which only a fragmentary English language version exists.
Even in the rather fragmentary and sometimes contradictory published versions of this story we can see several of the themes of post-secular abduction lore. We can see in their ambiguous Utopia the cusp point between the Utopias of the contactees and the wasteland dystopias of the abductees We should note also the influence of Truman Bethurum on this story as well as on the Hills’: the planet behind the known; the regimented society; the absence of knowledge of time and distance.
Other stories portrayed abductors or potential abductors in a decidedly more hostile mode. Argentine newspapers in February 1965 reported the story of an attempted kidnapping in Torrent in which the motif of size-shifting reappears – 50cm dwarfs who grew to 2.2m. tall as they tried to kidnap members of a farming family whose rifle failed. They were supposed to have returned days later as cyclopean giants [55 INTCAT files, information supplied by Richard Heiden; from Antonio Ribera, Platillos Volantes en Iberoamerica y Espana. Compare with: Gordon Creighton, ‘The humanoids in Latin America’, in The Humanoids, op. cit., pp.109 – 110]
British newspapers reported a story of three young people in a car parked near Felixstowe, when one lad suddenly left the car. Shortly afterwards his companions saw an orange oval above the trees and heard a buzzing sound. The young man who had left the car then staggered into the road and collapsed. They found burn marks on his back and a small lump under his right ear. He was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed as suffering from shock. On recovering he claimed he had been dragged from the car by an unknown force and seen a man in flames pointing at him. [56]
The Italian magazine Oltre il Cielo reported two stories from the Soviet Union. In one of them a woman parachutist was supposed to have been caught in mid-descent by a saucer with three occupants, taken on an immense journey to look back at the Earth, and given a message in an envelope to take back to the authorities. In the other story a mail-plane was supposed to have vanished and then found on the ground without crew, and with a circular mark nearby.
There is one final story from this period.
An attempt is being made by an American correspondent to try to track down anyone who may have investigated the story at the time, so far without success. To protect the witness, neither the place, the state, nor the sources will be publicly revealed. Suffice to say that it appears to have taken place in a rural area outside a town in the north central United States.
Quoting from the original article:
«Mr and Mrs [John Doe] who live on the side of a mountain, say the object has landed within a few hundred yards of their home and aimed a powerful light beam through their windows ‘in an apparent attempt to see what we look like.’ [Their] young grandson told them he has talked to a man who apparently came from the craft. (Mrs Doe didn’t even tell her husband till it appeared one night when he was at home).
[They describe it as] ‘a top-shaped ship with a row of lights around the circumference’. (This is a fluorescent light which can fluctuate between dim and very bright.) One evening as the Does were watching the ship, an airplane approached and the object’s lights immediately went out. As the airplane passed the lights went back on … A strong beam of light projected from the ship late one night as Mrs doe and her daughter ‘Emma’ slept in the front part of the house. They both awakened to see the beam of light about three inches in diameter pointing at their feet at the end of the bed. They both rose and … the light followed them around the room … Mrs Doe thinks the occupants of the craft were trying to see what human life looks like. (The full brightness of the light turns night into day.)
Before the April appearances of the object Mrs Doe’s place was constantly visited by wild game, including deer [and] bear … since that time no animals have been seen in the area … each occurrence of the craft ‘scared the dogs and spooked the horses’. The dogs rushed to get into the house and the horses stampeded to the far side of the property. Mr and Mrs doe say the object makes no real sound but rather gives the impression of a noise. Mrs Doe says: It’s more like cessation of normal sound – almost like it’s making a very loud noise which blocks off all other sounds, but still doesn’t seem to be making a sound itself». In addition there is another indication of the presence of the object; each time [it] is in the area the oil furnace in the house lights itself. (Mrs Doe checks the furnace to see if the object is near).
«Mrs Doe’s three-and-a-half year old son ‘Richard’ has told his mother and his grandparents of a man with whom he talks in the barn. He has told them the man’s name, but Mrs doe says it is almost unpronounceable … Each time the boy has gone with the man the dogs have run into the house and the oil furnace has lighted. (The object goes away from time to time, these absences coinciding with reports in neighbouring localities. Mrs Doe is convinced that the object is ‘not of this world’, ‘probably friendly’ and ‘we have nothing to be frightened of.)
«Other odd situations accompany the presence of the object. Mrs Doe and her neighbours reported TV transmissions (from a local transmitter) ‘completely disrupted when the ship is near.
«Mrs Doe also said various personal articles have strangely disappeared for a short time then, just as suddenly reappeared. Mrs Doe’s sunglasses and several personal items of clothing ‘have just vanished’ then shown up again in a different place». [INTCAT files, sources being kept confidential to protect witnesses]
«SEX, SCIENCE AND SALVATION»
The series commenced very rapidly on the heels of the public release of the ABV story when the New York Chronicle (21 November 1966) reported a shock story from back in August in which an Australian girl, Marlene Travers, claimed that while out for an evening stroll in the country near Melbourne she had seen a silvery, glowing disc land. It was 50ft by 10ft, and a tall handsome man with luminous eyes dressed in a loose fitting metallic tunic emerged from an opening in the side.
Though his speech was just a high-pitched whine, she understood by telepathy that he wished her to be the mother of his extraterrestrial child. He led her into a room, which seemed to go out of focus, and proceeded to have sex with her. When they had finished he led her out, but she tripped and burnt her ankle. Her friends found her with burnt legs, and there was an indentation on the ground where the incident allegedly happened. She had been missing for seven hours, and was later found to be pregnant.
Not to be outdone, the National Tattler (2 April 1967) reported how one Jean Sheldon, out driving in Michigan, stopped «for a breath of air», when she saw a 50ft. disc surmounted by a glowing red dome. It descended, and an opening appeared in the underside, through which she was levitated on board. Here she encountered three naked male humanoids with green eyes. They too told her they wanted to mate and she had «very exciting» sex with them for over an hour. Although this was supposed to indicate they were biologically compatible, unlike Marlene, Jean did not become pregnant.
Codelia Donovan of California met a man dressed in a long white robe, who kidnapped her in a black Cadillac and gassed her. She awoke on board a flying saucer where he was raped.
Another Californian, Claudette Cranshaw, was said to have been walking along the beach near Blanca when a luminous globe landed and six semi-humanoids pursued and raped her, as a result of which she gave birth to a stillborn blue baby.
It wasn’t just women however, who had erotic adventures with ufonauts. Eugene Browne, of Antrim, Northern Ireland, had a surprising adventure to relate. In the autumn of 1967 he wrote to Flying Saucer Review claiming that the previous 17th July he was walking in a wood near his house when he saw a dull blue-grey dish-like object with a rough and pitted outer surface, hovering just above the ground. From an opening in the centre two human shaped beings, dressed in silvery suits, floated to the ground and walked into the woods. Shortly afterwards they returned and floated back up again. [5]

The following summer Browne wrote to Contact UK’s Awareness magazine to report his abduction. On the night of 6 October 1967 he was walking home from a jazz club in Belfast, when he saw a craft in the sky. A yellow light came from it, which danced round him making him feel dizzy and loose consciousness. He awoke on a table in a windowless, oblong room, lit by a blue light from the floor. He was strapped down by metal bands attached to an apparatus at the side. Four men and a woman surrounded him; they had a bluish aura. The tallest, dressed in a dark one-piece suit, said «at last, someone who will do», and released him. The woman had long blonde hair, high cheekbones and was very fair with freckled complexion. He had sex with her and she told him they were «from another galaxy» and were experimenting to get human seed. Afterwards he was tied up and told it would not be long before he was returned. He blacked out, recovering in a field about a mile from the original location. He saw an object which took off with a whistle as its tripod gear retracted
Abduction reports from outside of North America show imagery very different from the developing stereotype. One of the earliest non-American semi-abduction reports is an obscure and now forgotten report from Kenya, which appeared in the Nairobi Daily Nation sometime in December 1965. Michael Mudachi was sitting in his home near Eastleigh Airport when he saw a point of light approaching from the horizon. As it neared he saw it was an elliptical object with transparent windows. It landed vertically and three humanoid figures emerged from it, wearing what looked like tall hats.
They had human appearance, seemingly a synthesis of all races. They spoke in an incomprehensible language but were able to make Mudachi understand that they were not hostile and wanted to take his photograph. To get him to agree they first photographed his brother and another witness, then they put him on a platform where there was an implement like a birdcage which emitted a white light, like sunlight. A powerful ray shot out from a red bulb at the centre of this contraption which hit Mudachi on the chest leaving him spluttering and fighting for breath. Suddenly the beings left without him seeing how. After the incident he fell into an unusually deep, dreamless sleep. Later he suffered from hallucinations, depression, loss of appetite and general malaise.
The theme of cold aliens is continued in the story of a Filipino woman walking in the Vienna Woods following a sort of presentiment. Suddenly she was paralysed, unable even to move her eyes, as a strange object descended. It resembled two saucers edge-to-edge, with a domed top and a three-sphere ‘landing gear’. Three ‘thin but strong’ men, 1.5 – 1.65 m. tall descended via a ladder. They wore
dark-brown one-piece suits and transparent helmets, through which humanoid faces could be seen. One held a small box which flashed a red beam at her when the figure pressed a button on it, which enabled the witness to hear them talking in English. They asked if she would like to visit their planet, then flashed another light and gave a warning about the wickedness of humanity.
Shrinking – dwindle
British abductors also leave trauma behind, but not so deliberately. Take the adventures of ‘BS’ and ‘SC’ at Longleat, Wiltshire in January 1968. On the 18th BS had been struck by a bright light as an object flashed past his car, which stalled. Later he received a phone call telling him to be at a spot called Heaven’s Gate on the Longleat estate of Lord Bath, at 2100 hrs on 21 January. There the two saw a tiny object the size of a soup-plate from which emerged a gossamer-like ladder down which tripped more than twenty-five beings no more than 4 inches (10 cm) tall. They ‘blinked out’, then reappeared at human size. They talked with the couple for a while then invited BS on board. He was shrunk along with them, taking off in the tiny craft which ascended with a whistling noise. They did not reappear until 0500 hrs the next day, when he was returned to normal size. He refused to divulge anything about his journey, except to hint something about the Earth’s core, and visits to underwater cities and communities. It was said, as it is about all taken by ‘them’, that he «was never the same man again».
The third of the early British abductions was the first of the ‘backdated’ stories, supposedly taking place in 1942 but only returning to the witness’s memory in the late 1960s. It was investigated in late 1969 or early 1970. The witness, Albert Lancashire, claimed that in the late summer of 1942, when he was 27, he was on sentry duty at a radar site two miles from Newbiggin-on-Sea, Northumberland, and about thirty yards from the sea. A light surrounded by a black cloud shone on him, then he saw another beam which he began to walk along; whereupon he was seized by a pygmy-sized man and carried aboard a craft, in which the rest of the crew was normal sized. There was a ‘captain’ with dark hair, wearing goggles. Lancashire was made to lie on a couch, looking up at a blue-domed ceiling. He could see another man wearing goggles leaning over a table. This figure smiled as if in welcome. He felt that some sort of medical examination had taken place but could remember no details, and next found himself back in the sentry box. */
**
Some years later he appears to have told Jenny Randles that the encounter involved seeing a naked oriental woman on a bed, and having goggles put on his own eyes. [5] Randles also reported that «Mr Lancashire appears to have incorporated his encounters into a semi-religious framework and quotes freely from the Bible». Lancashire also claimed a variety of anomalous experiences involving hypnogogic visions, strange lights, etc. He claimed that his memory of events returned in October 1967, yet he first came to the attention of investigators when he wrote to Lionel Beer, of BUFORA, having obtained Beer’s address from the Daily Mirror after they published excerpt from Interrupted Journey. These however were published in October and November 1966 (I have the original cuttings).
On June 4 the newspaper El Razon carried an article by Professor Alejandro Eru, secretary of the Argentine college of Parapsychology, who commented on the Vidal story but released the first full blown post-Hill Latin American abduction. Further details appeared in the Brazilian paper Correio de Povo on 11 June. These accounts told that the «well-known Argentine painter and sculptor» Benjamon Solar Parravicini was walking home from the theatre in Buenos Aires on a foggy night, with a copy of the theatre programme in his hand, when at the corner of Avenida Belgrano and Avenida 9 Julio he was confronted by what he first thought was a madman. The stranger was a fair-skinned Nordic type with eyes so pale it looked as if he was blind.
The man spoke to the witness in an unintelligible guttural language, but in a «kind and gentle manner», directing his attention upward, where through the fog Parravicini saw an unlit aerial object fifty metres above him. He became dizzy and when he recovered he found himself inside the object with three other people. One, who was «very handsome» addressed him in an unknown language, but the artist was able to grasp his meaning by telepathy. He told him not to be alarmed and that they would take him on a trip round the world, then release him. He observed surface features of Japan, France and Chile before he awoke from his ‘dream’, the theatre programme at his feet. Later he claimed further contacts with the beings, who said they were patrolling the Earth to see that no catastrophe befell us.
